Behind The Velvet Rope
At Bad Behaviour, we spend most of our time looking forward, being often busy with new challenges and gigs. There's no time to pat ourselves on the back or do much navel gazing. It's easy to forget all the cool jobs we've done.
While recently updating and reorganising my recent portfolio, I came across a photoshoot from a bondage workshop I attended in Melbourne during its Leather Pride Week Celebrations. Cameras normally are not allowed at the workshops, however the organisers allowed me the rare priviledge of documenting this extraordinary fetish event.
Till I make my final selection for release, Check out this sneak peek video of some of the images captured from this special shoot, that till now has not be unreleased.
I expected that the presence of my camera would make at least some of the guys attending uncomfortable and interfere with the level of intimacy that they choose to express. And that was the last thing I wanted. I wanted to capture the magic, connection and authenticity of people discovering and learning new aspects of their sexuality.
But the people attending were so open and proud and they shared their wonder, discovery and pleasure with me through the camera. I was blown away by their trust and openess. It was the first time I really understood the level of professional respect and trust I had earned in just a few years of my photography career. I'm so proud of that reputation that allows models to allow me in to an authentic moment or experience, even when I'm photographing them at their most vulnerable and intimate. People nearly always say afterwards that working with me is amongst the most positive and supportive experiences they have had. That means the world to me.

Challenging expectations
'I Once Heard Another Man's Heartbeat' was a series of multimedia artworks I created for the 2015 'Company Of Men Exhibition' in Melbourne, Australia. It is an experiential and interactive work, thematically exploring the construction of 'male experience' through intimacy experienced between male identifying people. It asked if there there was an essential truth about masculinity that existed beyond the constructions, biology or binary thinking.
I photographed and then I recorded an interviews with a variety of male identifying individuals that varied in age, race, relationship status and attitude. I asked them to tell me about a significant experience intimacy (not necessarily sexual) that they shared with a man.
I then used a range of analog and digital technologies to convey the perspectives by altering reality of images and objects I made or acquired, and by changing what the viewer saw and experienced. I hijacked (with permission) other artists work from the exhibition, which came to life to anonymously share their secret slice of secret mens business.
Below is a detail from a piece in the exhibition titled 'Danny'. It consists of a static red/cyan photographic image that altered with interaction. For example it became 3D when viewed through anaglyph glasses. And when scanned with a mobile device, it came to life and morphed gender and body structure of those depicted.
The subjects photographed in these two images above were both born biological women. However they both defy expectations of how we traditionally construct gender. Danny is an intelligent and evolved creature who lives totally and deliberately beyond tranditional gender and expectations of the way gender and sexuality is expressed, even by the LGBTI community standards.
The other subject, Esther, provides the a comparative tone that is initially a counterpart to Danny's masculinity. Further investigation and interaction changes the work, and as it shifts, so does our understanding of what we are looking at. It's much like the experience of meeting Danny in person,
"I'm just being me. And this is who I want to be, and who I am comfortable being. And you either accept that, or you don't. I hope when people meet me that it's a bit of a head fuck." said Danny in their interview,
"Because when they are challenged or fascinated, that's when I know they are actually 'seeing me'..."
We still largely build our reality thinking that 'looking' is the same as 'seeing', and that 'seeing' is the same as 'knowing'. Subsequently we can't see what is in front of us through our own projections and expectations. I use interactivity and play to engage the viewer and create a dialogue between them and the work.
Just like meeting people and getting to know them, viewing this art is not a passive experience. But hopefully it's one that brings you closer to the heart of the matter.
I'm a big fan of artist Antonio Da Silva.
PIX is a work of his that borders on brilliant for it's labour intensive simplicity and it's sharp commentary on the consumption, proliferation and ubiquity of online dating app in our lives and the selfies that are such a part of that. Da Silva fuses hundreds of individual dating app selfies into a sort of striptease narrative that literally climaxes. It's an amazingly detailed study of the posing, posturing and performance that is so often used to define gender, attractiveness and sexuality, that we so unconsciously replicate. Company Of Men Exhibition (Melbourne & Sydney)

We were recently invited to participate in a fantastic touring visual arts exhibition that featured across two of the biggest gay festivals in Australia.
Curated by Damien Hinds, the Company of Men exhibition brings together leading male artists across a spectrum of mediums who specifically explore the complexities, difficulties and joys of masculinity, gay sexuality and contemporary gay life in a fresh and at times challenging way.
We took this opportunity to not only showcase the images and new merchandise that we had created for the Bad Behaviour Boys 2014 Calendar, but also revealed our new work, Trinity.
A multi-faceted work that move across photography, projection, street art, digital animation and textiles, Trinity explores how our search for meaning comes to define who we are, and the power of symbols to transcend language.

Company of Men opened in Melbourne, Australia on 15 Jan 2014, at Brightspace Gallery, proudly a visual arts feature of the 2014 Midsumma Festival.
Company of Men then toured to Sydney, opening on 12 Feb 2014, across three amazing gallery spaces: Platform72, Oxford Art Factory and the Oxford Hotel. This event was a proud visual arts feature of the 2014 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Shaman : The Amazing Ari - Part 1
Whether it’s his beguiling eyes, his strikingly handsome face, the endlessly fascinating tatts that he sports all over his body, or his many acrobatic and performing talents, few people stand out in the crowd like the incredibly handsome and mysterious Ari Levenallel - aka The Amazing Ari. This unique man is a highly respected and accomplished aerial artist who performs and teaches throughout the world. He is also a mega spunk, made even more attractive by his down to earth nature.
I had been wanting to work with this talented and captivating man for many years since I first saw him. I finally got my opportunity to do so following a photoshoot I was commissioned to shoot images for a show he was performing in - the award winning In Persuit Of Glamour by my favourite Sydney performance artist, Dallas Dellaforce.
We shot 3 different concepts in Ari’s solo photoshoots. These are just some of the outtake images we shot together for a shaman photoshoot concept I created for him based on his spirit animal, the Wolf. One of the final Wolf images - the final image in the series below - appears in the 2014 Bad Behaviour Boys Calendar.

Bad Behaviour 'delivers' Inquisition XXI
Sydney Leather Pride Association once again proudly presents Australia's longest running event for the leather and fetish community, Inquisition, which comes of age celebrating it's 21st year in 2013. To create the visuals for Inquisition XXI, Sydney Leather Pride engaged Bad Behaviour publishing (Travis de Jonk and Ross Brownsdon) to create the party poster and promotional imagery.
"When creating the images for Inquisition's 21st party, we tried to envision what a 'Leather 21st' would look like. Nothing says 'fun' 'birthday' or 'party' like balloons. The leather scene can often be tediously serious, so we wanted to lighten up things a bit. The balloons not only feature the colours of the leather flag, but re-create in an original way.
The rest of the world has moved on in their recognition of what leather and fetish means and looks like. Many of the big centres of leather and fetish, like Berlin and London, embrace much broader and fresher rubber, sports gear fetish, uniform, lycra and bondage wear as well as the more traditional leather representations. And that is what we hope we delivered in our images for the party; A fresh, contemporary, relevant and engaging approach that broke with conventional representations of leather while paying homage to the traditional, and creating an inspiring vision who the community is in 2013 and what it looks like. These are not 'Tom's' men. They reflect an identity that is much more uniquely of our Australian fetish culture. They are as much about fun and pride, as they are sexy."

VOYEUR photoshoot sneak peek!
We love Burlesque, especially when it's as creative, sexy and testosterone filled as the all male Australian burlesque troupe, VOYEUR. The boys recently asked us to photograph them for their upcoming national tour. As if we would say no!
These guys are all seriously talented, and many of them award winners and counted amongst the top performers in the nation.

Urban Bear - Brent Cage in Sydney (part 1)
Hi bad boy fans. It's been many months since the Bad Behaviour Boys last posted and you're probabily wondering where the hell we've been and what we've been upto. Well, Ross and I have had a lot going on indeed, the biggest news is that we have packed up our studio and moved it to a brand new city - Sydney, Australia!
The most famous city in Australia, Sydney is the home of the iconic Opera House, Harbour Bridge and the biggest gay and lesbian cultural celebration in Australia (Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras). Over recent years in particular, the city is experiencing a huge and exciting resurgence in it's arts, entertainment and cultural life that has undeniably drawn Ross and I to not only work here but live here as well. And from the moment we arrived, we dived right into the cultural life of this city.

We can't wait to share with you all the wild and vibrant work we have been doing in Sydney since we moved here. And we can't think of a better way to kick it all of than with a shoot we did with international bear pin up, +Brent Cage, shortly after moving to Sydney in October 2012. We love working with this man. This daring UK bear fearlessly stripped down to nothing and ran around the streets with bad behaviour photographer Travis de Jonk to capture these great cheeky images for Urban Bear.
